The Sew Weekly Sewing Circle

I am brand new to the world of sewing and have great expectations and dreams of being able to make all of my own clothing. Regrettably, I am having a very hard time getting the hang of it. Can anyone recommend any starter projects? I have a bunch of dress patterns from the 1950's that I can't wait to make, but I don't want to ruin them until I feel comfortable. Any suggestions would be amazing. Thanks!

Hi Mary w. I think you could start with a skirt, a simple straight skirt (that was our first sewing project at a sewing course I pursued last year). Or even simpler - an apron - because it's basically made from rectangles of different sizes, and it will help you learn to do good straight lines on your machine.

It doesn't get more basic than that.

Making mistakes is the way to learn, so try whatever. Just go for it! :)

Try any of the patterns that have the word "easy" in them. Even Vogue has "easy"...flip them over and check both sides...it's the majic word!
