The Sew Weekly Sewing Circle

Hello Sew Weekly Lovelies!

Sorry Its been a bit quiet on my sewing front at the moment. As I have mentioned before I am having a few struggles with losing weight and my "sewjo" flying away as a result.

Thanks to some fantastic feedback on my blog and on here. I'm not going to let it phase me and I am going to continue sewing through the slimlining process.

We are coming up to my favorite time of year! Autumn! (or Fall for our ladies across the pond!)

I have got rid of a sensationally large amount of clothes and now need to start working from the ground up again.

I love fashions from the past and that used to influence me a lot but recently I have got into my modern patterns more and lost my sense of style somewhere in the middle.

I need to look at what I want my wardrobe to be like and what style fits my life now.

So my question is. What do you call your own personal style, How do you plan your own wardrobe and are you careful with what you sew for your own wardrobe? Or do you have a rail full of things that don't match like me!

Hi Stevie,

I'm kind of a mess, but I can see some logic in what I would call my "wardrobe". For me it's really being real with myself and asking what do I feel represents me…kind of the "who am I" visually. I'm not a frilly girl and I never was, so although I might love something someone else has on, I have to be honest with myself and think if it's right for me. I'm tall, I have really broad shoulders and kind of a tree trunk waist (not a lot of definition) so modern cuts look better on me, vintage is really hard for me…I love it but it's tough for me to fit it properly.

Colors really influence me so that's my starting point. I'm a fan of Pinterest, I like keeping a style board of things I like including color combinations, style of clothes and themes. From there I can focus in on what really intrigues me.

I'm learning that buying and making clothes that work together makes my life much easier especially when I'm getting ready for work. It actually makes so much sense to define your style, it's who you are, it's all around in your house.

Really good question Stevie!

Stevie,

this is a good question.. And honestly..I am like you.. I have alot of different things..However, I dont tend to go with a particular style..  I  try to pick what I like, and hopefully will look well on me. [Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesnt,ha].  I love the vintage patterns, but they are really hard to fit [I think it is because I am no good at grading patterns].  Even so.. I still tend to do vintage type dresses [Whether they be real vintage patterns or modern patterns ,that I can make look vintage].

But ,I also.. make modern everyday clothes too.. I am a  retired Respiratory Therepist  and after years of scrub suits..just bright pretty colors...is what I mainly look at..

As for the weight loss. I so understand..It is  a very difficult road..  In regards to that.I sew anyways..and REJOICE...when that garment gets too big.. [and for me..I normally get a good bit of wear from it, before that happens,ha].

Happy Sewing and good luck with your weight loss.

I call myself colorful!! :-) That's the thing that stands out the most. Bright and colorful.

I used to have different pieces that didn't match and weren't that flattering, but since then I decided to find out what works. I read several books on style and shape that made all the difference and just plain decided to be - me.  Oh, and the colors are also important, did I mention that? :-))I love seing some designs on others, but I'm not tempted to try them any more. Or, well, less often. Cause I'm an eternal optimist, hehe...

I recommend the work of these ladies : Trinny and Susannah (especially The Body Shape Byble), Bridgette Raes (Style Rx), Emily Neill (Wardrobe secrets) and the amazing Carol Tuttle ( Dressing your truth, with a totally different approach).

You may want to check them out. Of course, there is more out there. You will certainly find what works best for you.

And good luck!

I used to have loads of clothes, but I had a mad moment and got rid of piles. I felt better for it. I think at this time I felt I didn't have my own style. Now I know which clothes make me comfortable to wear, but I do love to dress up and this plays havoc with my 'own style'!

When sewing I like to know what I will be wearing my garment for everyday, special occassion and make sure it is suitable for that. I have learnt that even if you make a waldrobe of clothes there will always be some that you just keep going back to.

Best of luck Stevie, weight loss or even getting to terms with your shape is hard going. After 4 babies I know it's still hard to accept that I'm not the shape I once was.

Lots of love

My personal style is a vintage-inflenced mix of the tailored and romantic, which sounds oxymoronic but really means that while I love pretty florals, for example, I execute them in tailored styles, or pair them with something de-sweetening like tweeds. I am a sucker for something sweetly charming, but I also like to be taken seriously, so getting the mix right is important to me.

I keep things under control by being very realistic (and ruthless) about what works on me and what I'll actually wear. I'm very picky about materials that look and feel nice, that won't wind up a wrinkled mess after an hour. I'm very critical about a flattering silhouette and a good fit. I've ruled out big swaths of color that don't flatter. These and other criteria let me move very quickly through patterns and fabrics. I love a wide range of period fashions, but I know which ones don't work on my body, don't fit my aesthetic, don't work in my lifestyle.

I do try to fill in gaps when I shop or sew - especially with garments that make other things wearable, like a top to go with a certain skirt. That said, sometimes it's smart to make another one of something I already have, because I know I'll wear this one too and feel great in it. For example, I wear little fitted jackets all the time and can never have too many. But mostly I just try to pay attention when I'm getting dressed: what am I wishing were there in my closet? What would I pull on right now if I had it?
