I am Ashley a 21 year old house wife who has been married for one year. I enjoy vintage things, mostly from the 40s and 50s, reading books, cooking, baking, kids, the outdoors, biking, swimming, sewing (though I am not too skilled in sewing) and many many other activities.

My husband is a metallurgical engineer who recently graduated but is having some trouble finding a job making life quite interesting for the time being.

Luckily having grown up a farmers daughter I know quite a few things about thrift and making things comfortable on a shoestring budget.

And so for now we are living with my mother-in-law as the job search continues.

Hi Ashley,

So proud you joined sew weekly.. Know you will enjoy it.  I too love the vintage things. And know you will enjoy the sewing . I have sewed for years..but have learned so much from this nice ladies.

Hope your husbands job search produces a good job soon. Happy Sewing.

Hello!

I'm Heather from Baltimore, Maryland. I have been sewing forever, although mostly it's costumes-- outside of my day job I freelance as a theater designer, as well as doing some commissions, etc. While I've sewn periodically for myself over the years, only in the last year have I started getting over some early (10-15 years ago) disasters that made me nervous about sewing for myself! (which is silly, as I make numerous costumes a year, and have done ren fest garb, corsets, coats, and even 2 wedding dresses on commission).

After spending the last year in an effort to but 90% of my clothes from thrift stores, this year my goal is to make/alter/repair/re purpose most of the new additions to my wardrobe. We'll see how that goes ;)

Heather...so proud of your deciding to join sew weekly and sew for  you.. I too.. have sewed for years.. But mainly for my daughter and now my 4 grandaughters.. this year.through Mena's blog.. I decided to sew for me.. and It has been so fun.. Lots of mistakes....but lots of great garments too..\   Happy sewing.

Hi! I'm another Heather, currently living in Beijing, China. You could call me a global nomad. I grew up in New Mexico, Colorado, Alaska, Texas & Kuwait before marrying a fellow nomad and living in Costa Rica, Spain, Canada and China. We've been in China for 6 years. My husband is a corporate pilot and I'm a librarian (without a library, I'm afraid) and a former RN and aviation instructor.

My mom is an excellent seamstress and although I begged her to sew for me, I never bothered to learn from her. (I even got her to sew my home ec final project for me. How bad!) Then last summer I moved to Beijing (after spending 5 years in the Chinese hinterland) and a friend introduced me to the Muxiyuan Fabric Market. I was stunned. Acres and acres of fabric. Inexpensive silk! Notions galore. Always interested in fashion, I assumed I would be buying fabric and passing it along to a tailor along with a sample or magazine photo to copy. Then I started thinking... I needed a creative outlet and the knitting I attempted wasn't working out too well. I'm a librarian, so I turned to my searching skills and came across a gazillion fabulous sewing blogs and websites. I lurked for a while, unsure if I was capable of doing my own sewing (remember that home ec project?) but before I knew it, the sewing bug bit! I've now scouted out every fabric shop and notion stall in the whole of Beijing, memorizing bus routes and learning the Mandarin for 'zipper' and 'interfacing.' I bought a Brother sewing machine from a dusty little shop, where I observed three Chinese girls (somewhere between 18 and 25) going crazy over the machines. Home sewing is picking up among the young here, too.

The problem is that I have a very severe procrastination problem, so while visions of fabulous designs dance in my head, I dig into a bag of crisps on the sofa while surfing sewing blogs. I need support! I love the Sew Weekly theme projects I've seen around the blogosphere and so I came here to see what The Sew Weekly is all about. I love what I see! While procuring patterns can be difficult here, I've subscribed to Burda and invested in a couple of sewing books. I'll be in the US this summer where I'll buy a suitcase full of patterns. I'll be posting about sewing and crafting in Beijing on a new sub-blog of my expat blog, On the Fringe, as soon as I stop procrastinating enough to get it set up. ;) How does Sewing On the Fringe sound?

Welcome Heather - All that fabulous material? I'm really looking forward to your creations. Sewing on the Fringe sounds good :-)

Welcome, Healther. Well, you're certainly having an interesting life. The Fabric Market must be quite an experience. Looking forward to reading your blog.

                                     Judy

My life sounds a lot more interesting than it actually is! I'll be sharing some stories about the fabric markets and if I can remember to take them instead of just buying fabric, pictures too.

Thanks Judy and Jen for the welcome!

My procrastination is taking a beating today! Got the new blog up: http://global-gal.com/SOTF/

It needs some major design work, but at least it's up!

Heather, checked your blog out.. Gonna be great..I will keep a check on it.. Happy sewing and blogging.
Thanks! I've got lots of plans for it.

Well, I guess  I'll go ahead and introduce myself.

My name is Diana, and I'm an apprentice midwife near Albuqeurque, New Mexico.  I've been sewing for 20 years or so, but I've mostly been learning on the fly.  I LOVE upcycling, mostly because I'm too cheap to buy fabric.  It's much much much easier to beg family and friends for their old sheets, curtains and clothes.

I'm a bit unusual for this site, as I'm not a blogger.  Maybe someday I'll put up a tutorial if I do something tutorial-worthy.  Even though I've been sewing for so long, I'm just now getting to a point where I feel confident in my skills and final products.

Anyway, time to share the computer.  Be seeing you all around!
