The Sew Weekly Sewing Circle

Hello, everyone!  I know I'm new here but I thought I'd jump in right off the bat for some advice.

I have a beautiful piece of olive green boiled wool that's been hiding in my stash for about 10 years now, it's a remnant piece so I think there's only about 1-1.5 yards of 54" fabric.  I'm itching to do something with it now because I have a fun vintage rayon print that I know would be the perfect lining fabric for it.

I know it's a relatively small piece but I'd love to do a simple cropped jacket or something similar. Any suggestions on patterns to look for?  I haven't seen anything I like that will use such a small piece.  Or if you have a photo to share I can always drape the pattern myself.  Thanks in advance!

PS. If you'd like to see the fabrics I can try and take a photo tomorrow :)

I think I'd go for a skirt and if you have enough left over maybe a vest.  But that's just me.....

If the fabric isn't too bulky for the darts and collar.  (Pattern calls for cotton, shantung, gabardine.)

I agree a capelete would be lovely with the right lining.

A capelet sounds like a great easy and fun way to use your wool piece, but I would consider what kind of clothing (garment) will get the most use by you.  If you really won't wear a capelet much or it won't match any clothes, then you might consider something else.  A vest is a good idea, also.  For a skirt, I suggest you look into Simplicity 2154, a 1960's retro reprint with a darling pencil skirt pattern which calls for about 1 1/2 yds. of 45" fabric.  Bingo!  Or maybe you could make Simplicity 3673, a '50 empire waist jumper,  making the bottom part in your wool and having the bodice part a matching/contrast.  Whatever you do with it, I'll bet it will be warm and classy!

Thank you for all the suggestions!  The capelet pattern looks adorable, but I agree with Kelly that I probably won't get much use out of it.  I think when I picked the fabric up I intended to make a skirt, but now I feel like a little cropped jacket would get more use.  I do have that Simplicity 3673 but haven't made anything with it yet, I may have to reconsider my jacket idea!

Mc Calls' website is having a $1.99 pattern sale, I picked this one up to see if I can use it with some small changes.  http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m6443-products-14890.php?page_id=115

Any other suggestions?  I will post photos of the fabric tonight!

What a cute pattern Kristine.  Do you live near a Joann fabrics?  Check with them to see it their patterns are on sale this weekend. I know they're having a sale...... can't wait to see those fabrics!

Thanks, K.  I live in a really good area for fabric shops (just 10 minutes from Chicago) but the McCalls website had a better deal then the local places :)

I finally found the fabric hidden away in my attic, but it's only 3/4 yard :(  I'm still hoping I can do something with it.  Here's a photo of the wool and the leftover rayon I thought would make a cute lining.  That pink spot in the middle is my phone's fault, not a flaw.  I'll have to let you know what I figure out!
