The Sew Weekly Sewing Circle

Here is my holiday dress, made using a vintage pattern that's now reprinted - Butterick 5281. My fabric is a beautifully soft and non-itchy 100% wool gabardine in a rich, royal red color. This dress was sure challenging, and a bit time consuming, but well worth it in the end. Every seam inside my vintage '46 dress (not the hem, of course) is a French seam. The shape of the skirt portion on this dress is very complimentary to the waist, as are the small lower bodice gathers at the zipper side. I sewed in cling-free lining together with the fabric (except for the bodice front and the skirt portion) so as to be able to easily fix any minor fitting issues. Beware of the tight fitting sleeves with little "reach room" ease! The pattern calls for decorative buttons at the neckline and small zips for the wrists. I changed this, however, by opting for loop and button closures instead, to combine utility with ornamental purposes. My red vintage dress makes me feel so happy and classy! This is actually the 3rd dress I have made using a 1946 pattern. Read and see more at my blog http://circle.sewweekly.com/profiles/blogs/decked-out-in-red-1946-style
