My Grandmother had a hard life but she managed to get herself to the US in the 50's to stay with a sister where she had a very happy and memorable time.  I used to love visiting her house in Lyall Bay, Wellington, NZ where she had a lovely collection of 50's bits and pieces.  She gave me some lovely fabric with boats - hope to use it soon and a gorgeous bracelet which of course I lost as a teen - what I woulden't give to get it back! - this one's for you Nana!
