New Look 6776- anyone tried cutting the midriff piece on the grain?

I'm in the middle of refashioning a dress and I have very little fabric to play with! I'm thinking of basing the bodice of the new dress on the bodice of New Look 6776

BUT

I have nowhere near enough fabric to cut the midriff piece on the bias, as the pattern suggests. Has anyone tried cutting the midriff piece on the grain? I'm worried there won't be enough ease in the finished dress if I do this...

Anyone tried this? Or anyone got any thoughts?

Could you try cutting the midriff in a muslin on the grain, basting it in so you could try it on, to see?

Hi Joann, thank you! I'm on my third muslin, trying to find a pattern that fits the fabric I have! From trying on the muslin, well, I can't really tell! So I wondered if anyone had tried this before with this pattern...
